On June 29, 2011 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved a project of ECPAT which is aimed at strengthening local partners in five destination countries (Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Dominican Republic and The Gambia), increasing awareness about child sex tourism and to motivate the local tourism industry to take action to protect children from sexual exploitation. The project runs until June 30, 2013.
In 2009 and 2010 ECPAT NL already collaborated with the local partners in Thailand, Cambodia, The Philippines, Dominican Republic and The Gambia in a similar project funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project focused on strengthening local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), promoting implementation of the Child Protection Code, training of different stakeholders and raising awareness by distributing information materials. Within the project 200 professionals in each of these destination countries were trained on measures they can take to protect children from sexual exploitation. Professionals consisted of people working in the tourism industry, as a security guard, with the police or with an NGO.
At the end of the project a monitoring visit was done in every destination country. During the monitoring visit the general picture of a selected touristic area concerning the promotion of the protection of children against sexual exploitation was investigated, as well as what was achieved with the capacity building activities and awareness activities, and recommendations from different stakeholders on how to improve the protection of children against sexual exploitation in tourism were collected.
